The Delta State Police Command has confirmed the death of a suspected kidnapper and armed robber, Liberty Kunu, also known as Commander Liberty or Double Agent, during a gun battle with police operatives. Kunu, who was allegedly the leader of a gang that had been terrorizing Sapele and its environs, was arrested along with his gang members on January 28, 2026.
According to the police, the suspects were responsible for the abduction and robbery of three individuals, who were robbed of valuables worth N9 million.
The police received a complaint of the abduction and quickly swung into action, tracking down the suspects to their hideout at Ibada-Elume community.
During the operation, the police recovered one AK-47 rifle, one locally fabricated revolver gun, five pump-action guns, and other accoutrements. However, during the retrieval of the rifle, the police team was ambushed by hoodlums suspected to be members of Kunu’s gang.
A gun duel ensued, and despite being outnumbered, the police team managed to repel the attackers due to their superior firepower. Unfortunately, Kunu sustained gunshot injuries during the exchange and was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The police operational vehicle was also riddled with bullets during the gun battle. Other members of Kunu’s gang are still in custody, and an investigation is ongoing. The Delta State Police Command has assured the public that it will continue to crack down on kidnappers and armed robbers in the state.
The police commissioner, CP Aina Adesola, has commended the operatives for their bravery and professionalism in the face of danger. The command has also urged residents to continue to support the police with useful information to help tackle security challenges in the state.
