The venue of a New Delta Congress, NDC, campaign meeting in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State was disrupted early Thursday morning by a group of armed men, according to a press statement from the office of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege.
In the statement signed by Omo-Age and released at 10:15am, the Senator and NDC Senatorial Candidate for Delta Central said the incident occurred at about 5:30am.
He alleged that more than 50 armed men, led by Mr. Emmanuel Erube, who he identified as the Disciplinary Committee Chairman of “Jakpa,” invaded the meeting venue, pulled down canopies and destroyed campaign materials.
Senator Omo-Agege further alleged that during the invasion, Mr. Erube and his group threatened to kill him and the NDC Uvwie Campaign Coordinator, Olorogun Dr. Esere Ejifoma Atumu, if they appeared at the event.
The Senator directly linked the incident to Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.
He said he holds the Governor “directly responsible and culpable,” citing what he described as private statements allegedly made by the Governor that he would have Omo-Age killed “and nothing will happen because he is the Chief Security Officer of Delta State.”
Omo-Age described the attack as “state terrorism” and “an attack on democracy,” and said it was evidence of “a deliberate state-backed intimidation of opposition in Delta State.” He added that the involvement of “named political operatives” points to Government House, Asaba.
As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official response from Governor Oborevwori, the Delta State Government, Mr. Emmanuel Erube, or the security agencies mentioned.
In the statement, Senator Omo-Agege made three demands:
1. The Inspector General of Police and the Director General of the Department of State Services should arrest Mr. Emmanuel Erube and his associates, investigate alleged sponsors in Government House, and prosecute them.
2. The Delta State Commissioner of Police should provide 24-hour armed protection for himself, Dr. Atumu, NDC campaign teams and supporters in the state.
3. INEC, the US Embassy, EU, AU, and civil society groups should take note of the incident and deploy observers and human rights monitors to Delta State.
Addressing supporters, Omo-Age said: “Do not be afraid. Do not back down. We will not be silenced. We will not be intimidated. The fight for a New Delta continues.”
Senator Ovie Omo-Agege is the Deputy President of the 9th Senate and the NDC candidate for Delta Central Senatorial District in the forthcoming elections.
Delta State is preparing for political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Security agencies in Delta State have not yet confirmed the incident or made any arrests as of press time. Efforts to reach the Delta State Police Command for comment were ongoing.
The public is advised to remain calm as investigations are expected to commence.
