The Delta State Police Command has made significant strides in combating illicit drug trafficking, with the arrest of a suspected drug dealer and the interception of a large quantity of suspected Indian hemp in separate operations across the state.

In the first operation, operatives of Ugborikoko Division intercepted a tricyclist, Evans Emmanuel Akpowene, on Airport Road, Effurun, on April 8, 2026, and recovered substances suspected to be illicit drugs, including Indian hemp, Canada Loud, Colorado, and Monkey Tail.

The suspect and exhibits are in custody, with investigations ongoing.

In another operation, the Dragon Patrol Team intercepted a gold-coloured Sienna bus along Ozoro/Kwale Road on April 2, 2026, recovering 21 bags of substances suspected to be Indian hemp.

The driver fled, but efforts are underway to apprehend him.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, commended the operatives’ vigilance and reiterated the Command’s zero-tolerance policy for drug-related offences. He urged residents to support the Police with useful information to aid ongoing operations.

DELTA STATE POLICE COMMAND ARREST DRUG SUSPECT, INTERCEPT TWENTY-ONE (21) BAGS OF INDIAN HEMP IN SEPARATE OPERATIONS

The Delta State Police Command, under the leadership of CP Yemi Oyeniyi, psc, acipm, mnips, has intensified its intelligence-led operations against illicit drug trafficking with the arrest of a suspected drug dealer and the interception of a large quantity of suspected Indian hemp in separate operations across the State.

1. ARREST OF SUSPECTED ILLICIT DRUG DEALER AND RECOVERY OF SUSPECTED ILLICIT SUBSTANCE

On 8 April 2026 at about 1200hrs, operatives of Ugborikoko Division, while on routine traffic duties along Airport Road, Effurun, intercepted a tricyclist, one Evans Emmanuel Akpowene ‘M’, whose actions raised suspicion. A search of the tricycle, prompted by a strong odour emanating from it, led to the recovery of a large quantity of substances suspected to be illicit drugs, including Indian hemp, Canada Loud, Colorado, and Monkey Tail. The suspect, along with the exhibits and the tricycle bearing registration number EFR 173 VD, is in custody while investigation is ongoing.

2. INTERCEPTION OF 21 BAGS OF SUBSTANCE SUSPECTED TO BE INDIAN HEMP ALONG OZORO/KWALE ROAD

On 2 April 2026 at about 1300hrs, operatives of Dragon Patrol Team, while on stop-and-search duty along Ozoro/Kwale Road by Ebendo Community, Ndokwa West LGA, intercepted a gold-coloured Sienna bus with registration number KTU 276 JV.

On sighting the policemen, the driver abandoned the vehicle and fled into the bush. A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of twenty-one (21) bags of substances suspected to be Indian hemp. The exhibits and vehicle has been recovered while effort to arrest the fleeing suspect is ongoing.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Yemi Oyeniyi, psc, acipm, mnips, commends the vigilance of the operatives and reiterates the Command’s zero tolerance for drug-related offences. He urges members of the public, particularly youths, to desist from engaging in illicit drug activities, and encourages residents to support the Police with useful information that can aid ongoing operations.
