The incident, which occurred two weeks ago, also caused a blackout and damaged electrical appliances in the centre.

According to eyewitnesses, a high-voltage wire snapped and fell on the custodial facility, causing an electrocution that led to the deaths. The victims were rushed to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.

The Akwa Ibom State Controller of Corrections, Frank Okonkwo, confirmed the incident and described it as unfortunate. The victims were awaiting trial for conspiracy, kidnapping, and armed robbery, and were presumed innocent until proven guilty.

Okonkwo called on the relevant authorities to address the issue of the faulty transformer to prevent a recurrence, noting that the same transformer had been faulty a few years ago. An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

*Rehabilitation Programme Planned*

In a bid to support the rehabilitation of inmates, the Command plans to organize a rehabilitation and empowerment programme for inmates who have acquired skills while in custody. The programme aims to equip them with start-up packs to enable them to reintegrate into society upon discharge.
