United States President Donald Trump has announced a ban on three major American media outlets — CNN, MS NOW and Politico — from the White House, accusing them of consistently publishing false reports about his administration.

President Trump disclosed the decision in a social media post on Friday, where he accused the organisations of spreading “FAKE NEWS” and publishing fiction about the presidency. According to him, the three outlets “shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report FICTION and LIES when they’re covering the President of the United States.”

The President also hinted that more media houses could face similar action, stating in his post, “Other Fake News Media Outlets to follow.”

Despite the announcement, correspondents of the affected organisations were still seen working at the White House on Friday afternoon. However, Fox News, citing an unnamed senior White House official, reported that the White House had begun notifying the three organisations that they would be barred from accessing the White House grounds from Saturday.

Later on Friday, while addressing reporters in the Oval Office, Trump clarified that the decision was not triggered by any single report or incident.

“It’s really just cumulative stories over the past few years,” he said, adding, “I don’t have to let them into my, into the people’s house.”

When asked to explain his threat that other outlets would follow, Trump mentioned The New York Times and The Washington Post, which he also described as “fake news.”

As at press time, the full scope of the ban remains unclear. Legal experts note that while American presidents have wide discretion to determine access to select events such as Oval Office meetings and restricted press pools, a broader move to deny generally available press facilities or revoke White House credentials could attract legal challenges under the First Amendment and due process provisions.

The development marks another departure from traditional White House press relations under the Trump administration, which has scaled back access for some established media organisations while granting greater presence to newer outlets perceived to be sympathetic to the administration.

Reacting to the announcement, CNN defended its White House coverage, insisting that its journalists have a constitutional right to report without government interference.

“We have a right under the US Constitution to do that reporting without hindrance or interference from the government,” the network said in a statement. “Should the ban which President Trump threatened go ahead, it would be an illegal assault on that fundamental and constitutionally protected right.”

Politico, in a post on X, said it would continue to fairly report on the White House and future administrations, adding, “We will vigorously defend our First Amendment rights against any attempt to restrict them.”

Report says MS NOW declined to comment on the matter.

Press freedom advocates have also condemned the move. Seth Stern, Chief of Advocacy at the Freedom of the Press Foundation, described the ban as a direct violation of press freedom.

“It’s difficult to imagine a more blatant violation of the First Amendment than Trump banning news outlets from the People’s House for criticizing the government,” Stern said.

Similarly, Jameel Jaffer, Executive Director of the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, said the Constitution forbids the President from punishing journalists over disagreements with their coverage.

“If President Trump means to expel these news organizations from the White House press pool, his action is doubly unconstitutional because the press pool is a ‘public forum’ under the First Amendment, which means the president can’t exclude journalists from it on the basis of their viewpoints,” Jaffer stated.
