The Nigeria Immigration Service announced the change on Friday, calling it a major step to boost ties between the two countries and make travel within Africa easier.

The policy was confirmed in a statement by NIS spokesperson DCI Akinlabi Akinsola. It comes after President Bola Ahmed Tinubu announced the reciprocal arrangement at the Africa CEO Forum in Kigali. Tinubu said the move is meant to reduce travel barriers between Nigeria and Rwanda.

The NIS also noted that the decision reciprocates an earlier visa-free arrangement Rwanda had extended to Nigerian citizens.

*What the new policy covers*
Under the arrangement, Rwandans can enter Nigeria without a visa for up to 30 days for legitimate reasons like tourism, business trips, and official visits.

Anyone planning to stay longer than 30 days must apply for the appropriate visa either at a Nigerian embassy or consulate abroad, or through Nigeria’s e-visa platform.

*Implementation*
The Immigration Service has instructed all entry points to start enforcing the policy immediately.

That includes airports, land borders, and seaports nationwide, following a direct order from the presidency.

*Why it matters*
NIS said the visa waiver is part of wider efforts to strengthen Nigeria-Rwanda cooperation and support Africa’s broader push for integration.

The agency described it as a reflection of strong diplomatic relations between the two countries, and said it should help increase intra-African travel, tourism, and trade.

The service added that the policy aligns with international migration standards and fits into the federal government’s Renewed Hope agenda for national development.
