Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to grow the state’s economy through agriculture, saying government will back genuine farmers and private investors with critical infrastructure rather than direct cash handouts.

The governor made the declaration on Saturday during an inspection tour of three major agro-allied facilities: Tatcha Farms in Okuloho, Okpe Local Government Area, and Amity Global Farms and Manroy Livestock Farms at Ohorhe 1 in Uvwie Local Government Area.

Speaking to journalists after the tour, Oborevwori said his government’s role would be to create an enabling environment that allows agribusinesses to thrive and employ more Deltans.

“Government support for businesses will not necessarily be through direct funding,” he said. “It will be through the provision of infrastructure, improved power supply and other incentives required for enterprises to thrive.”

The governor disclosed that his administration has already awarded a contract for a 33kV electricity line to serve the farm clusters in Uvwie and adjoining areas.

He said the project, when completed, will significantly improve power supply to farms and other businesses in the corridor.

He also announced plans for road interventions, noting that ongoing road projects across the state are designed to link farming communities to markets.

Specifically, he promised to construct an access road connecting the Warri-Sapele Expressway to the community hosting Amity Global Farms to ease movement of produce and inputs.

According to him, the directive to the state’s economic team to embark on statewide inspections of farms and businesses is to identify bottlenecks, understand challenges, and determine areas with potential for expansion.

Oborevwori linked the farm visits to the outcomes of the state’s recent Economic and Investment Summit, which he said was organized to showcase Delta’s investment opportunities, especially in agriculture, and to attract both local and international capital.

He stressed that agriculture remains central to his administration’s job creation and food security agenda, and urged civil servants and other residents to take up farming.

“Agriculture can create jobs, improve food security and even help to reduce crime,” the governor stated.

The governor said the government’s agricultural intervention would also extend to small-scale farmers. He announced that fertilizer and other farm inputs would be distributed, but warned that only “genuine farmers” would benefit and that resale of the inputs would not be tolerated.

At Tatcha Farms, Chief Executive Officer, Olorogun Alfred Mrakpor, commended the governor for the visit. He said the inspection provided an opportunity to showcase the farm’s contributions to food security, employment generation, and overall agricultural development in the state.

At Amity Global Farms, Managing Director and CEO, Mr. Idama Amurun, said the company is in talks with Brazilian investors and the Delta State Government to expand cassava production and set up processing plants.

He explained that cassava can be processed into industrial starch, ethanol and other derivatives, which he said would create substantial employment if scaled.

Amurun disclosed that the farm currently employs over 300 workers and also cultivates pepper and cucumber.

However, he listed inadequate financing, delays in the supply of day-old chicks, lack of facilities and staff accommodation, and limited access to land as major constraints to expansion.

The governor’s visit is seen as part of broader efforts to position Delta as an agro-industrial hub and reduce over-reliance on oil revenue through private sector-led growth.
