The Delta Online Publishers Forum, DOPF, is set to host its 2026 Annual Conference and 6th Lecture Series, bringing together a broad spectrum of media professionals, government functionaries, political actors, security chiefs and industry leaders in Asaba, the Delta State capital.
The high-profile conference is scheduled to hold on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, at David’s Event Centre, GRA, Asaba, by 11:00 a.m. The forum is expected to provide a robust platform for critical conversations on the state of democracy, electoral credibility, national security and the role of the media in Nigeria.
With the theme, “Democracy Under Pressure: Electoral Integrity, Security Challenges and Media Accountability in Nigeria,” the conference will interrogate the growing strains on democratic institutions in the country.
The theme and details of the conference were contained in a joint statement issued by the Chairman of the 2026 Conference Planning Committee, Dn. Chijioke Williams Ugbolue, and the Secretary, Comrade Josephine Omodior.
According to the committee, the theme was carefully chosen to drive informed, constructive and multi-sectoral engagement on issues that are central to the survival, credibility and consolidation of Nigeria’s democratic governance.
The organizers explained that deliberations will focus on the pressures facing democratic institutions, threats to electoral integrity, emerging security concerns, and the expanding responsibilities of the media in a fast-changing and often contentious information ecosystem.
They emphasized that the media, especially online and digital platforms, plays a pivotal role in shaping public opinion, educating the citizenry, strengthening accountability and amplifying diverse viewpoints. This, they noted, makes professionalism, accuracy, ethical standards and responsible digital publishing more imperative than ever.
The conference will also examine the intricate link between elections, security and media reportage, including the dangers of misinformation and disinformation, the dynamics of political communication, declining public trust, as well as the safety, welfare and ethical obligations of journalists in the line of duty.
The Planning Committee disclosed that preparations are in top gear to make the 2026 edition the largest gathering of online publishers and journalists in Delta State in recent years.
Top government officials, political leaders, federal and state lawmakers, academics, business executives, top brass of the Nigerian Army, the Police, Department of State Services, DSS, other security agencies and representatives of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, are expected to participate.
The committee said the diverse composition of expected guests was deliberate, to ensure that the theme is dissected from professional, political, academic, security and institutional perspectives.
Delta State Governor, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Francis Oborevwori, is expected to attend as the Special Guest of Honour, while a highly respected professional and political figure has been slated to chair the occasion.
Similarly, a renowned academic has been selected as the Distinguished Guest Lecturer for the 6th Annual Lecture Series, the committee added, though the identities of both the Chairman and Guest Lecturer will be unveiled in due course.
The DOPF, the umbrella body of online newspaper publishers and digital media practitioners in Delta State, has in recent years sustained its tradition of creating platforms for professional discourse on governance, peace-building, security and development.
Its recent programmes have focused extensively on responsible journalism as a tool for societal cohesion and sustainable development.
The 2026 conference, according to the organizers, will go beyond the routine annual gathering of media professionals to become a major convergence of ideas, expertise and institutional insights at a critical moment in Nigeria’s democratic journey.
The Planning Committee expressed optimism that the dialogue would generate far-reaching recommendations that will deepen public understanding of the challenges confronting democracy, electoral management, national security and media practice, while reinforcing the imperative of professional, ethical and accountable journalism in Nigeria.
