Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, has congratulated 16-year-old Oghenegaren Esiovwa-Thompson for making history with a gold medal win at the Commonwealth Fencing Championships held in Lagos.
Esiovwa-Thompson, who hails from Osubi in Okpe Local Government Area of Delta State, clinched Nigeria’s first-ever gold medal in the men’s Under-23 epee category.
The teenager’s victory has been described as a landmark achievement for the country in the sport.
In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Festus Ahon, Governor Oborevwori described the feat as remarkable and a source of pride to both Delta State and Nigeria.
He commended the young athlete for his talent, discipline and composure, noting that he triumphed over more experienced opponents to secure the historic win.
Competing for Nigeria for the first time after switching allegiance from England, Esiovwa-Thompson had an impressive outing. He defeated three opponents from India on his way to the final.
In the championship match, he delivered a dominant performance to beat Asian champion Lokesh Verma of India 15-5. India’s Godwin Natarajan and Ashwini Shaurya finished with bronze medals.
Earlier in the tournament, Esiovwa-Thompson went unbeaten in Pool 4, which earned him a bye into the round of 16.
He then defeated South Africa’s Mathobela 15-7, followed by a 15-2 victory over an Indian opponent in the quarter-final. In the semi-final, he faced another tough test against India’s Ashwini Shaurya and edged him 15-11 to advance to the final.
Governor Oborevwori said the achievement reflects what young people from Delta can accomplish when given the right support, training and opportunities.
He applauded the fencer’s family and coaches for their role in his development and urged Esiovwa-Thompson to remain focused as he pursues more success on the international stage.
The Governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to youth development and sports.
He noted that the accomplishments of athletes like Esiovwa-Thompson will inspire more young Deltans to take up sports and strive for excellence.
Oborevwori wished the 16-year-old more victories in the future and charged him to continue to represent Delta State and Nigeria with honour.
