The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has issued a strong call to action for Southern Governors to take decisive measures against the worsening insecurity in Nigeria’s Southern region. The group cites the growing wave of kidnappings, killings, and rapes perpetrated by criminal elements disguising themselves as herdsmen or hunters.

*Key Demands:*

– *Urgency and Decisive Action*: Governors must take their constitutional responsibility as Chief Security Officers seriously and act with urgency to tackle the existential threat.

– *Prioritize Safety Over Politics*: Safety of lives and property should take precedence over “political interest” or partisan calculations.

– *Cue from Emir of Muri*: Southern governors should take a cue from the bold stance of the Emir of Muri in Taraba State, who issued a 30-day ultimatum to Fulani herdsmen to vacate the region.

*Recent Incidents Highlighting the Crisis:*

– *Uromi Tragedy*: 16 persons were killed in Uromi, Edo State, following rising tensions between residents and suspected criminal herders.

– *Farmers’ Plight*: Many farmers in Delta State have abandoned their farms due to fear of attacks, leading to food insecurity and loss of livelihoods.

CALL TO ACTION:

The DOPF reminds Southern governors of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to state leaders to take ownership of the security situation in their domains and deploy all lawful means to restore peace.

The group emphasizes that the primary purpose of government is to protect lives and property, and it’s time for rhetoric to give way to purposeful governance
