Security stakeholders in Nigeria are advocating for unbiased and balanced reporting as a key solution to addressing the country’s insecurity challenges.

At the 5th Annual Lecture Series of the Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) held in Asaba, Delta State, stakeholders emphasized the importance of responsible journalism in promoting national security..

ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Police Public Relations Officer, stressed that the Nigerian government is battling against cybercrimes, and urged journalists to confirm reports through calls to all parties involved, rather than making monetary demands.

He explained that by promoting responsible journalism and collaborative policing, Nigeria can move closer to finding local, implementable solutions to its security challenges

Key Takeaways:*

– _Unbiased Reportage_: Adejobi emphasized the need for balanced media coverage to combat insecurity ¹.
– _Cybercrime Prevention_: He urged media practitioners to avoid involvement in cybercrimes, such as romance scams, Yahoo-related fraud, and misinformation.
– _Collaborative Policing_: Adejobi advocated for collective collaboration in policing society.
– _Ethical Journalism_: Journalists should verify facts and avoid monetary demands, instead seeking comments from involved parties.

*Security Challenges in Nigeria:*

Insecurity in Nigeria stems from various factors, including:

– _Institutional Weakness_: Government failure to provide basic needs and services ¹.
– _Economic Inequality_: Pervasive material inequalities and unfairness.
– _Ethno-Religious Conflicts_: Distrust among ethnic groups and religions.
– _Weak Security Systems_: Inadequate equipment and training for security personnel.

*Moving Forward:*

To address these challenges, stakeholders must work together to promote unbiased reportage, prevent cybercrime, and foster collaborative policing. By doing so, Nigeria can create a safer, more secure environment for its citizens.
