Members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) are staging a peaceful protest at the United States Embassy in Abuja, seeking international support to protect Nigeria’s democracy. The protesters aim to bring attention to what they perceive as the country’s drift toward a one-party system, alleging that the ruling party is intimidating opposition members.
The demonstrators are submitting protest letters at the US Embassy, the European Union complex, and the Ministry of Justice, carrying placards that urge intervention to safeguard Nigeria’s democracy and judiciary. This protest comes amid an ongoing leadership crisis within the PDP, which has seen party leaders engaging in counter-suspensions.
The crisis escalated recently when the national chairman, Umar Damagum, announced the suspension of key party officials, including National Secretary Samuel Anyanwu. However, Anyanwu retaliated by leading a faction to suspend Damagum and other top officials, further deepening the party’s internal conflict.
As the situation unfolds, a faction loyal to Abdulrahman Mohammed has resumed control of the PDP national headquarters, while Damagum and his supporters are noticeably absent. The PDP’s internal struggles have been ongoing for over two years, casting uncertainty over the party’s future . channels online
