Stakeholders Call For Stronger Institutions Ahead Of 2027 Polls

The National Democratic Congress, NDC, candidate for Delta Central Senatorial District, Senator Ovie Omo-Agege, has appealed to church leaders in the district to pray for peaceful elections and to partner with his campaign ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Omo-Agege made the appeal at a meeting with the Delta Central Chapter of the Concerned Pastors for Good Governance, CPGG, held at Ughelli.

Addressing the pastors, the former Deputy President of the 9th Senate said the meeting was to seek spiritual support and to present his blueprint for the district.

He cited current economic hardship, youth unemployment and insecurity in parts of Delta Central as major concerns, referencing 2 Chronicles 7:14 as a call for prayer and responsible leadership.

The former lawmaker, who represented Delta Central from 2015 to 2023, listed projects and legislations facilitated during his time in the Senate, including the establishment law for the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun, the federal polytechnic and Defence Space School in Orogun, the federal university of medical and health sciences in Kwale, and the Oil and Gas Industrial Park in Delta.

He also referenced his roles in the passage of the Petroleum Industry Act and the Electoral Act, 2022, and constituency projects across the eight local government areas of the district — Ethiope East, Ethiope West, Okpe, Sapele, Uvwie, Ughelli North, Ughelli South and Udu.

Omo-Agege outlined three requests to the pastors: sustained prayers for the district and the country, preaching unity and civic responsibility from the pulpit, and partnership on social interventions for widows, orphans, unemployed graduates and vulnerable groups.

During his remarks, Omo-Agege alleged that his life was being threatened

He called on the pastors to pray for his safety and that of his family and campaign team.

On party politics, Omo-Agege urged the group to support the NDC at all levels.

He said the party’s presidential hopeful, Peter Obi, and its governorship candidate in Delta, Chris Iyovwaye, along with other NDC candidates for National and State Assembly seats, share his governance values.

He pledged that if elected in 2027, he would run an open, consultative representation and prioritize jobs, healthcare, clean water, roads and support for women and vulnerable persons across the district.

Earlier the president of the body, Bishop Israel Ugono, said the body whose primary objective is to support political leaders with good intentions has adopted Agege as the sole candidate for the Delta Central Senatorial seat because of his track record as a man whose interest was to attract development to Delta State.

He said the group is committed to supporting Agege through prayers.

“We are concerned about good Governance. Our objective is to support and pray for leaders who have good intentions for the clergy as well as their followers”, the cleric stated.

The CPGG is a faith-based group in Delta Central.
