A nationwide strike by the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG) may lead to fuel shortages in the country.
The strike, which began on Tuesday, follows a breakdown in negotiations between the Federal Government, labor unions, and the Dangote Group.
The talks collapsed after the Dangote representative, Sayyu Dantata, walked out of the meeting, citing unresolved issues. The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) accused Dangote’s representative of deliberately stalling negotiations.
NUPENG President Williams Akporeha stated that the union’s action is in defense of Nigerian workers, accusing Dangote of attempting to “enslave” employees. The NLC had previously raised concerns about Dangote’s alleged anti-union practices and monopolistic agenda.
The strike will continue until further notice, with NUPENG stopping fuel loading activities across depots nationwide.
