The people of Kantu community also known as Ikantu in Warri South Local government Council Area. Delta State have reaffirmed its identity as part of the Ijaw ethnic group, rejecting claims that it belongs to the Itsekiri nation.

According to community leaders in a press conference held at the Kantu Town Hall on Friday, they explained that their ancestors, who date back to the 11th century, were of Ijaw descent, specifically from Oporoza in the Gbaramatu Kingdom.

They acknowledged intermarriages with Itsekiri women, which may have influenced their language, but emphasized that this does not change their Ijaw heritage.

The community leaders condemned attempts to affiliate them with the Itsekiri nation, warning that such actions could spark conflict and threaten peace.

They reaffirmed their loyalty to the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom and asserted their identity as Ijaw, calling for unity among Niger Delta ethnic groups.

The leaders on behalf of the community however reiterated its unwavering loyalty to His Royal Majesty, Oboro Gbaraun II, Aketekpe, Agadagba, the Pere of Gbaramatu Kingdom. The leaders called for unity among Niger Delta ethnic nationalities while affirming: “Kantu was never and will never be part of the Itsekiri ethnic group. We stand firmly as Ijaw.”
