The Ilorin Zonal Directorate of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has taken into custody a 51-year-old father of ten, Akilu Salisu, along with self-proclaimed cleric Umar Mikailu Shuaibu and Salisu Nura, over their alleged involvement in circulating counterfeit foreign currencies, including US Dollars and Pounds Sterling.
The duo of Nura and Shuaibu were initially nabbed by the Kwara State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) during a stop-and-search operation on January 27, 2026.
They were later handed over to the EFCC for further investigation and potential prosecution.
Nura was found with 435 pieces of fake $100 notes and 378 pieces of fake £50 notes.
Investigations revealed these were meant for Shuaibu, with Salisu as the final recipient in the distribution chain. Probes into Shuaibu’s digital payment account showed suspicious transactions over ₦5 million, which he couldn’t explain.
The EFCC will arraign the suspects in court once investigations are complete.
