Authentic Subject Lists Released for Basic and Senior Secondary Education

The Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) has warned about the circulation of fake and unauthentic subject listings for primary and secondary schools in Nigeria, causing confusion and apprehension.

This was contained in a press release by the Executive Secretary, NERDC, Prof. Salisu Shehu.

In response, the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) has released an approved list of subjects for Basic and Senior Secondary Education under the National Education Sector Reform Initiatives (NESRI).

In response, the Federal Ministry of Education (FME) has released an approved list of subjects for Basic and Senior Secondary Education under the National Education Sector Reform Initiatives (NESRI).

*Approved Subjects for Basic Education:*

– *Primary 1-3:*
– *Core Subjects:*
– English Studies
– Mathematics
– Nigerian Languages (one language)
– Basic Science
– Physical & Health Education
– Christian Religious Studies (CRS) or Islamic Studies (IS)
– Nigerian History
– Social and Citizenship Studies
– Cultural & Creative Arts (CCA)
– Arabic Language (optional)

– *Subject Load:* Minimum of 9 subjects, maximum of 10

– *Primary 4-6:*
– *Core Subjects:*
– English Studies
– Mathematics
– Nigerian Languages (one language)
– Basic Science and Technology
– Physical & Health Education
– Basic Digital Literacy
– CRS or IS
– Nigerian History
– Social and Citizenship Studies
– CCA
– Pre-vocational Studies
– French (optional)
– Arabic Language (optional)

– *Subject Load:* Minimum of 11 subjects, maximum of 12 or 13

*Approved Subjects for Junior Secondary School (JSS 1-3):*

– *Core Subjects:*
– English Studies
– Mathematics
– Nigerian Languages (one language)
– Intermediate Science
– Physical & Health Education
– Digital Technologies
– CRS or IS
– Nigerian History
– Social and Citizenship Studies
– CCA
– Business Studies
– Trade Subjects (choose one):
– Solar Photovoltaic Installation & Maintenance
– Fashion Design & Garment Making
– Livestock Farming
– Beauty & Cosmetology
– Computer Hardware & GSM Repairs
– Horticulture & Crop Production
– French (optional)
– Arabic Language (optional)

– *Subject Load:* Minimum of 12 subjects, maximum of 13 or 14

*Approved Subjects for Senior Secondary School:*

– *Core and Compulsory Subjects:*
– English Language
– General Mathematics
– One Trade Subject
– Citizenship and Heritage Studies
– Digital Technologies
– *Science Subjects:*
– Biology
– Chemistry
– Physics
– Agriculture
– Further Mathematics
– Physical Education
– Health Education
– Foods & Nutrition
– Geography
– Technical Drawing
– *Humanities Subjects:*
– Nigerian History
– Government
– CRS
– IS
– Nigerian Language (one)
– French
