Stakeholders in Delta State have called on the government to urgently address the growing crisis of unregulated land acquisition, which is displacing families, eroding cultural heritage, and fueling unrest across communities.
This appeal was made during the 12th anniversary celebration of Ndokwa Reporters in Asaba, where the BEL Dialogue, a policy and development platform, was unveiled.
*The Issue at Hand*
Unregulated land acquisition has become a pressing concern, with fraudulent practices and unchecked transactions leaving local communities vulnerable to land grabbing by powerful interests, external developers, and criminal actors. Participants at the forum emphasized the need for a comprehensive review of the 1978 Land Use Act, which they believe is riddled with loopholes and misuse.

Rt. Hon. Ossai Nicholas Ossai, Chairman of the dialogue and former lawmaker, stressed the urgency of tackling the problem. He cited a recent protest by the Umuseti Community of Utagba Uno in Ndokwa West over unauthorized land sales as evidence of the crisis. Ossai emphasized the importance of ensuring transparency in land transactions, particularly in Statutory Rights of Occupancy (urban areas) and Customary Rights of Occupancy (rural communities).
