The Delta Online Publishers Forum (DOPF) has urged the Delta State House of Assembly to create a new law for establishing a community security corps
that truly serves grassroots needs. According to DOPF, the existing law is ineffective due to lack of implementation and unclear structures.
In a memorandum submitted to the House Joint Committee on Bills and Peace and Security, DOPF emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach, including a clear governance structure, media integration, local recruitment, and sustainable funding. They also recommended involving traditional leaders, civil society, and community groups in the agency’s advisory councils.
DOPF proposed a phased implementation within 12 months and stressed the importance of legislative oversight, human rights, and international best practices.
This call for reform builds on DOPF’s previous advocacy, including a 2020 communiqué and recent engagements with the state government.
