The federal
government has be called upon by Parents, under the aegis of the National Parent Teacher Association of Nigeria, NAPTAN, and students under the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS not allow the issue of the payment of lectures salary degenerate to another industrial action

This is coming on the decision by lecturers, under the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to embark on rallies and declare a lecture free day in protest against the payment of half salary to them by the government last month on resumption after a eight-month strike.

Report says that NAPTAN and NANS are calling on the government to do the needful by paying the lecturers though not ignorant of the times wasted but nothing should be done to further truncate the process to bridge the gap between the government and the lecturers.

They explained that Lecturers and students would only need to forfeit some holidays while Parents are look forward to their children concluding their studies to enable them reap the fruits of their labour.

The two bodies appealed to both parties to play down on the issue of personality clash or ego to avoid education being relegated totally.

NANS, in a statement by the Southwest Zone Coordinator, Adegboye Olatunji, Deputy Coordinator, Alao John and Public Relations Officer, Awoyinfa Opeoluwa, said steps being taken by the current administration at the federal level dos not assure Nigerians that the nation gives priority to education.

The Leadership of NANS alleged that those directly appointed and being paid from our commonwealth to oversee Education and Labour matters namely; Mallam Adamu Adamu, Minister of Education, Dr. Chris Ngige ,Minister of Labour and Employment, and Festus Keyamo, Minister of State for Labour and Employment made meagre contributions to the development.

They further alleged that Dr. Ngige particularly was willing to crash the entire sector just to bring ASUU on its knees and massage his own ego as he seems ready to bury the entire educational sector which might lead to a total disaster to the tertiary education in
Nigeria.

The body however demanded that their intellectuals and moulders of their collective future be accorded their deserved respect and their dignity not tampered with by putting in motion the procedure to pay the remaining balance of their remunerations immediately.

Meanwhile, the newly-registered Congress of University Academics, CONUA, is set to discuss the issue of salary and others at its maiden National Executive Council, NEC, meeting slated for Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife, Osun State later in the month.
