A prominent U.S. lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., has announced plans to brief congressional leadership and senior members of the U.S. National Security Council on alleged weaknesses in the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC) ability to safeguard Nigeria’s electoral process.

The firm acknowledges INEC’s capacity to manage federal elections but questions whether this capacity will be effectively utilized given deliberate efforts by political actors to manipulate the voting process.

According to the firm, the 2023 Nigerian elections exposed vulnerabilities in INEC’s management, and current developments suggest a similar pattern may emerge in upcoming elections.

Despite Congress being on Easter recess, the firm is actively engaging with key members and plans to brief congressional leadership and the National Security Council early next week, aligning with the State Department’s assessment.

The firm contrasts the current U.S. administration’s potential response with the Biden Administration’s 2023 stance, suggesting President Donald Trump’s approach would be more assertive against electoral manipulation.

The firm intends to recommend Global Magnitsky sanctions (#GloMag) on Nigerian politicians or INEC officials involved in electoral rigging, including:

– Freezing foreign assets
– Restricting access to the global financial system
– Imposing travel bans on individuals and their immediate family members

The firm’s actions reflect growing concerns about Nigeria’s electoral integrity and potential international repercussions for those involved in undermining the process . guardianonline
