The Delta State Government has approved the construction of hostels for male and female students in nine state- owned tertiary institutions to address accommodation challenges.
The State Commissioner for Higher Education, Professor Nyerhovwo Tonukari, announced this after the State Executive Council meeting, stating that the decision aims to alleviate the pressing need for student accommodation.
The rising student population, with three new universities having around 40,000 students, has put a strain on available accommodation. For instance, Delta State University, Abraka, has over 35,000 students but only 2,000 hostel spaces.
To address this, two hostel blocks will be built in each of the nine institutions.
The government will also complete the abandoned Senate Building at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, which was initially awarded in 2010.
Commissioner for Housing, Hon. Godknows Angele, assured effective supervision and timely delivery of the projects.
These approvals are part of the government’s efforts to strengthen infrastructure development in education.
