The Akwa Ibom State government has initiated an investigation into the boarding facilities of secondary schools statewide.
This decision comes after a viral video exposed the subpar meals served to students at Presbyterian Senior Science College in Ididep.
The Commissioner for Education, Mrs Idongesit Etiebet, disclosed this in a statement on sunday, announcing the immediate suspension of the school’s Principal Mrs. Idongesit Etiebet, has suspended the school’s Principal, Dr. Nse Sunday Umoh, until the investigation concludes.
The probe will encompass 25 boarding secondary schools, scrutinizing hostels, dining halls, recreation areas, menus, kitchens, and sanitary facilities.
According to Etiebet, the action followed an unscheduled visit to the school, which raised concerns about the state of boarding facilities
The commissioner emphasized that while the state’s free education policy only covers tuition fees, the government remains committed to ensuring the welfare and dignity of students. The commissioner urged parents to take on more responsibilities in supporting their children’s education, given that they no longer have to worry about tuition fees.
The ministry is dedicated to ensuring that all public schools meet the minimum standards for the well-being of students and staff.
While the state’s free education policy only covers tuition fees, the government remains committed to ensuring students’ welfare and dignity. Parents are urged to support their children in secondary schools, as the ministry strives to maintain minimum standards for public school facilities.
